BSides Canberra, April 2021 was my first ever conference and it was definitely well worth the wait due to it being postponed in 2020. I had the opportunity to learn from speakers and compete in the organised CTF challenges, as well as having the chance to meet some amazing people some of whom I’ve looked up to over the past few years.

One of these stand out individuals was none other than Ricki Burke, an amazing recruiter in the realm of Cybersecurity. I had listened to his entire podcast series called “Hacking Into Security”, which I found absolutely amazing. The podcast consisted of him interviewing individuals who had a vast variety of pathways on their Journey to now being Cyber Security professionals. Having the opportunity to speak with Ricki even for a short period was invaluable, and I got to show my appreciation for producing his podcast as it really spoke volumes to me.

Meeting other like minded individuals both already in the Cyber Security and working towards an opportunity in the industry similar to myself was something I am extremely grateful for, I really felt like I honestly belonged and a part of something much bigger as everyone was just so welcoming and generous with their time.

Overall I could not recommend this conference or the Cybersecurity conferences enough, it was a tremendous experience that a lot more people should attend if they’re able to. I will definitely be back again to this event and to other conferences! I am very thankful to the organisers and volunteers for an amazing experience across the broad.
