CompTIA Security+ 601
On April the 5th, 2022 I sat for the CompTIA Security+ 601 certification via virtual proctor through Pearson VUE, and passed on my first attempt! Overall this was a really good experience, definitely grateful that I didn’t need to attend an in person testing center.
This certification has been something I’ve wanted to achieve for quite some time, I didn’t purchase it in July of 2021. I believed it would give me a good breadth of knowledge, and some insight into the different areas that make up the Cybersecurity industry, as I wasn’t sure what area I wanted to focus on most.
The biggest challenge I faced during the preparation for the certification exam and why it took me so long to sit for it, was not booking the date for the exam. Not until I actually booked the exam in for April 2022 did I focus and dedicate time to getting this certification achieved. Because this was my first certification, I found myself utilising too many different resources which ended up being counterproductive whilst studying.
The different resources I utilised included:
- Professor Messer’s Security+ SY0-601 Training Course [Completely free on YouTube].
- Jason Dion’s CompTIA Security+ SY0-601 - Complete Course & Exam [Paid on Udemy].
- Jason Dion’s CompTIA Security+ SY0-601 Practice Exams & Simulated PBQs [Paid on Udemy].
- CompTIA Security+: SY0-601 Certification Guide by Ian Neil [Book purchased from Amazon].
From the above resources if I was to recommend what I’d use to prepare for this exam, it would be Jason Dion’s “Complete Course & Exam” and his “Practice Exams & Simulated PBQs”. I found these two resources together were very helpful in explaining certain concepts and the practice questions after each chapter were very useful. I would also highly recommend complementing these with Professor Messer’s free YouTube course as it doesn’t cost anything, and it’s good to have something explained by a second person as they may explain it differently further assisting your understanding of topics.
Overall this certification was tough especially with the vast topics it covers, however I’m very happy that I’ve now completed it. It has provided me with invaluable knowledge and insight into the five domains it covered:
- Attacks, Threats and Vulnerabilities.
- Architecture and Design.
- Implementation.
- Operations and Incident Response.
- Governance, Risk and Compliance.
It has also helped me to solidify my interest in learning more about the blue team and incident response area of Cybersecurity, this will be the next step in my progression focusing on this area. From here I will work towards completing the TryHackMe Cyber Defense learning track, which I believe will prepare me before I begin my journey towards achieving the Blue team Level 1 certification. I am extremely excited and motivated to dive into these resources, utilising the base knowledge that I’ve got from achieving the CompTIA Security+ 601.
